From Yuseong-gu, Daejeon. His room was so small that for years he did nothing but downpick to a metronome in a space of about one square meter. Listening to Adam Dutkiewicz and Joel Stroetzel of Killswitch Engage and Willie Adler of Lamb of God, he learned how to cut a note before he learned how to hit one. The way the rest after his palm mutes drops like a blade is a habit from those years.
대전 유성구 출신. 방이 좁아서 1제곱미터 남짓한 자리에서 메트로놈을 켜고 다운피킹만 몇 년을 반복했다. Killswitch Engage의 Adam Dutkiewicz와 Joel Stroetzel, Lamb of God의 Willie Adler를 들으며 음을 때리는 법보다 음을 끊는 법을 먼저 익혔다. 팜뮤트 뒤의 쉼표가 칼처럼 떨어지는 건 그때 생긴 습관이다.
In 2013, when he was thirteen, Killswitch Engage released Disarm the Descent, the album that brought Jesse Leach back. RYAN spent half a year learning every riff on it, start to finish, with downpicking only. At fifteen he heard Wage War's debut album and felt, for the first time, that his own generation was playing the same riffs.
열세 살이던 2013년, Jesse Leach가 돌아온 Killswitch Engage의 Disarm the Descent가 나왔다. RYAN은 그 앨범의 리프를 처음부터 끝까지 다운피킹으로만 따는 데 반년을 썼다. 열다섯 살엔 Wage War의 데뷔 앨범을 듣고, 같은 세대가 같은 리프를 치고 있다는 걸 처음 실감했다.
On stage he never moves a single step from his spot. His riffs are machine-tight. When the show ends, he is the first to disappear.
무대에서도 자기 자리를 한 발짝도 벗어나지 않는다. 리프는 기계처럼 정확하다. 공연이 끝나면 가장 먼저 사라진다.
